I had an amazing ride this year. Can someone tell about the location of this massive drop in elevation on Day 2? We had an accident there, the guy in the bunch in front of me hit the rear of another rider at full speed (at the bottom of this drop) and the way he fell down was horrific. I thought he was dead. I was 5 seconds behind him and crossed between him and his cycle. Miraculously, he survived and escaped major injuries.
That sounds like the one on Metler Road just east of North Pelham - http://goo.gl/maps/eHkrp . Almost 12% grade on that. (Thank you Strava). There was another one about 3km later on Overholt road - about 10% grade. The accident sounds awful and I'm glad he wasn't bady hurt.
It was a teammate, 19 yrs old that went down. His tire blew, sounded like a bomb at the Boston Marathon that went off. I really thought some terrorist act went down. Never heard a tire explode like that before at over 60km/hr, he was right behind me. He came out with some road rash but was ok and joking afterwards.
The day before on the long hill down into Dundas I had a pinch flat as I rounded the right turn about half way down. Not as bad as this fellow, having slowed for the corner, but it was a bit dicey trying to wrangle the bike over to the curb while other riders whizzed by on both sides. Over 1300 kms in this event and only 1 flat. I count myself very lucky.
I know the young lad who went down. He's a training buddy of mine.
Although it looked real bad I am happy to say that all he has is some road rash and no broken bones. Maybe road rash kind of under states it. He's pretty scraped up but is in good spirits and is on the mend.
Lesson learned by all who saw this but even more important us Vets have to press the point with the newbies that sppeds like this can lead to some horrific crahes and deadly outcomes
At these speed spandex and a helmet won't help you!
On a happier note, what a great weekend. Great weather and great result
See you all back on the road in 363 days,,,who's counting LOL!
