Out for a nice afternoon training ride today when disaster hits....Windy+reaching for water bottle equals crash.
Finished another 5km or so and went home. After visiting the hospital it is a broken collar bone. Timing sucks, but I am hoping I can be in good enough condition to still ride in June.
Such a bummer........helmet saved me for sure. Ill find out Thursday if i need surgery. What are my chances of being ready for June 8?
And yes, typed with one hand

Considering you were still able to bike home, and have another 6 or 7 weeks to heal, I believe you will be ready. Wish you all the best for a fast recovery.

I think the key will be just taking it easy and letting it heal without pushing myself to hard.
Good grief, good to hear you weren't injured more seriously than that! If you rest it up for a few weeks and are otherwise in decent health and fitness, you should be able to complete the ride. Although, you may be a bit more sore than you would be otherwise....
Good luck with the healing - may it be swift!

Ouch, glad you are OK. My friend broke his collarbone at last year's RTCC ride! He was near Hamilton camp and crashed on a turn. Unfortunately, he needed surgery and lots of healing time. But he will be back at this year's RTCC even stronger.
Well, three weeks later, and just over three weeks till the ride, I am now typing this with two hands :)
No surgery will be required and after weekly Xrays and doctors appointments, the doctor is confident that I am healing at a good pace.
That being said, the Dr. does not want to see me till June 6 for more xrays. This is really cutting it close as far as the ride goes, as I cannot obviously ride in the RTCC if I have not been cleared to go back to work.
I am hoping that on June 6 when I go to the doctor that I will be given the go ahead to head back to work , and thus can still complete the ride. I have done zero training in the last three weeks, which also sucks, but I figure I can over come that.
My jersey arrived in the mail today. Unfortunately I cannot raise my arm high enough to put it on. ( I have been wearing button up shirts for the last three weeks because of this) I am just hoping that If i continue to take it easy and rest I will be able to participate as a rider this year. Last year was my first RTCC and it really was one of the best weekends of my life. I want this bad and WHEN I cross the finish line June 9 after 227km it will be even sweeter!!
I certainly do wish you all the luck in the world - there is nothing like cycling The Ride. BUT, if something happens you cannot ride, consider volunteering. The first year I signed up for the ride, I also decided to take skiing lessons. Well, unfortunately, I hit a patch of ice on the ski hill & ended up being taken off (in a sled) by the ski patrol. When I knew I couldn't participate, I decided to volunteer and had a ball. I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer both at the beginning and then drive over to Hamilton & finish day-1 there and then be at Niagara Day 2 when the riders came in. It was great!!
I know that it's really difficult to even think of not participating as a Rider - and I'm rooting for you that you won't have to "go there". But if you do, volunteering is almost as good as riding.

Oh for sure!!!
After riding last year, I realized how much of an important role the volunteers and crew play in such a massive event like the RTCC.
If i am unable to ride due to injury, then most absolutlely I will be there volunteering!
But I want to ride again sooooooooooooooo bad! 3 weeks to go! Its going to be close
First time back in the saddle and managed to tough out 34 km. I am hoping for doctor clearance at my appointment on Thursday. It well no doubt be a challenge to ride 227km with no little training put in, and obviously the still tender shoulder, but if its one thing i have is determination!
See you all Saturday! (pending Thursdays doctor appointment of course)
I hope thursday brings you good news and you can get on the road
Two years ago I had half my right kidney removed because of a precancerous tumor in late February.
Thought I wouldn't make the ride even though deep in my heart I would have hit the road regardless of what the doctor said
Naturally fear of my wife killing me would have probably put an end to that idea.
At the end of the day I made the ride and loved it more than anything
I wish you the best and have a feeling you will ride even if the doctor says maybe?
See you on the road!
Well just got back from the doctors a few minutes ago, and it looks like i am good to go!
He cleared me to return to work on Monday, and then I dropped the ``bombshell`` that I plan to ride from Toronto to Niagara falls this weekend. He looked kind of shocked. I had then told him how the ride is fully supported, and rest stops ever 30 km or so. He said that from an injury standpoint, I will not be in risk of further damage which is good (unless a major incident occurs like a crash) He is just concerned about my pain level and discomfort. I told him that I want this bad, and I can always pull out part way if need be. He seemed okay with that answer and just reminded me to not let my `young male pride`get in the way. lol
