Do all 5th year riders get one?

Helmets are to be distributed at bike drop off the night before the ride. There will be an email going out to all 5yr riders to address this

Too bad such an important and in this case, significant, piece of equipment is available only the night before the Ride!

Surely there's an alternative - other than not wearing it.

 Your complaint doesn't make any sense. In order to ride you've got to have a helmet... So whether you get the gold one or not, there's no impact.

I don't know for sure but I'm would think the reason for handing them out on Drop Off Day would be to get the correct size and fit for each rider. I'm really looking forward to getting this helmet and seeing all the other 5 year riders!
