I have a delicate situation that I need some advise on. I am our team's captain and have just found out that one of the team members who has been quite lackluster in fundraising and training actualy does not want to do the ride at all. The only reason they signed up for it is becuase their dad volunteered them...... our team is made of work employees, the dad being a higher member of staff.
Most of us have been working really hard to funraise as much as possible individually and we have a big team event coming up, my concern is that those of us who have been working hard to reach our goal are going to have to "share" team money coming in with someone who can't be bothered........ and is not even serious about finishing the ride or the cause.....
The team member in question has even mentioned to other team members that he is surprised he has not been kicked off the team.
What should I Do...
That really sucks! Whether or not he rides is not important, but a commitment to raise $2500 was made.
It's not clear if the problem person is also an employee? Is his dad also participating? Or is the dad providing other demonstrable support to the team in the work environment? Will splitting his share among the remaining team members make a difference on whether or not some make the minimum?
My first thought is you need to have a sit-down with the team member and his dad. Lay the cards on the table. If he's not going to contribute to the team he can't expect to receive an equal share - if any (leave negotiation room) - of proceeds from events. Remind them that the team is not on the hook for the minimum donation, he is.
But if Dad is acting as a major supporter, you may just need to suck it up. Assign junior his share and move on.
Thanks for the reply, both are employees. The dad is in our location in the states and does not seem to have made any financial contributions to the team.
Our work has agreed to donate 5000.00 to the team but is waiting until closer to the ride to then donate the money to any team member who have not yet met their goal so that no one is left behind.
We have also been holding onto cash donations made to the team and will be applying that to team members in the same manner... if anyone is short of their goal it will go to them instead. There are 10 of us on the team and so far only 3 have met their goal. Most of us are working really hard to make sure we all get to ride.
This is where my concern lays..... why should some of us bust our butts for months to make this happen and he not do anything and still get to go......
I think I am going to talk it over with the company owner and see what he has to say. He is a very smart man and is also on the team, I trust his judgement so I will voice my concerns to him and see how he wants to proceed.
I have the same problem on my team. Last year an emplyees son joined and basically did nothing. It was very disappointing to say the least. Our company is very generous when it comes to support for the ride. Senior management agrees to donate $1000 to each rider on the team. As captain my rule is that each rider has to come up with the balacne of the minimum pledge on their own before they ride. We aslo collect some serious donation money from other clients and suppliers as well.
I pool all of this money together and hold on to it for as long as possible, sometimes it comes to putting the funds in on day one. Basically if you don't make the minimum $1500 come ride day the buck stops so to speak and the money gets passed around to those who have made the limit.
As a Captain it's very frustrating to have people sign up for the ride because they get caught up in the emotion or momentum and then sit back and do nothing. They take the spot of others who are willing to work towards a goal.
I have even tried switching members out because of this exact reason but this can't be done.
I say quietly let him go his way. No need for public flogging but there's no need to congradulate the lack of effort either.
yeh i like your idea of making people raise a minimum amount before getting group money. i will keep that in mind if i do it again next year. we are going to wait and see what happens later in the month, when it comes time to take a look at who needs what to make it to ride day. if there is not enough in the group money pot to cover him then he won't go.
