I'm a 1st time rider and starting to get serious about training now that the nice(r) weather is coming. I would classify myself as an "average" rider - not super fit lightning quick, but not out-of-shape.
I'm wondering about the average pace of the ride so that I can train appropriately and have a good idea of what to expect (I'm doing the 100km Toronto to Niagara ride). Is it generally a meandering pace (15km/h), steady (20km/h), quick (25km/h)? While I'm sure there will be some hardcore riders that go 30km/h+ I'm hoping this is not the norm as my racing days (and legs) are far behind me.
Pick a pace and you will have company. There are riders of all calibers out there, but i think most are riding in the 20-25km/h range with the average being closer to the higher end.
There are definitely many riders at all speeds - with the real fast riders finishing in under three hours, and the slower riders taking upwards of six or seven (including rest stops). As SilverFox said, pick your pace and you'll have people to ride with!
