I have recently purchased a new cycle cross bike and I have it on my indoor trainer. I notice that there is rubber coming off the back tire onto the mat I have under it. A co-worker told me to wrap the back tire with duct tape to prevent tire wear instead of buying a slick. Does anyone have experiene with this? Thanks!
What kind of trainer is it? Even with slicks you'll likely get some rubber flaking off - that's why they make trainer tires. Trainer tires are made with a different, firmer, rubber that doesn't wear as easily when placed under the loads of a trainer. And for the same reason you should never ride outside on a trainer tire - they don't provide the traction and control needed to ride safely.
CX tires are definitely not intended for a stationary trainer. And I can't see duct tape being a lasting solution.
I got a scrap wheel from a friend's bike shop and stuck on my bike, (wheel and tire) that way it does not wear out my tire, scratch up my wheel (new bike this year!)
