The starting formalities begin at 8, with a few speeches and such. Bikes finally start rolling about 8:20. The further back in the crowd, the longer the wait to get through the gate. Assuming there is at least 4500 riders, it will take some time to get everyone through.

In 2009 I chose to watch/cheer the crowd through the gate and before hitting the road myself about 20 minutes later. Last year I was in the start group. This year I'm leaning toward waiting for the group to clear.
