I particpated in last years ride and saw people riding: road, mountain, hybreds, recumbent bicycles. It really depends on what kind of time your looking at posting for yourself and how easy you want it to be. On the road, over as many kilometers as we will do over the two days, a road bike with be the most comfortable.
Hey there Suthie.. as mentioned by Richard you will see all kinds of bikes in this event...you really can't go wrong with a hybrid or road bike for this event. The placement of the handlebars may make the hybrid more comfortable being in a more upright position for the long ride and may be more practical if you want to use your bike afterwards for some neighborhood recreational riding....however, if there is potential for you to do other charity rides (which you will!) or perhaps a duathlon/triathlon (you never know!?) then i also say invest your money in a road bike....
A hybrid will be fine. If you are interested in getting into riding then a road bike would be a great choice as it will be the most efficient on the long 200K ride.
Think about what the bike will be used for after the ride. A hybrid may be more useful for running around town or just a fun ride.
All good advice above. Look beyond the ride and buy something that fits your intended use. I have been riding Cyclocross bikes as they offer the (near) speed and weight of road bikes and can be equipped with knobby or slick tires to adapt to the use. I can ride road and trails with the bike and fit in everywhere. They are tough, but not for smashing over river beds or unprepared trails. Determine your top price range then spend more! It is well worth it if you intend to continue riding.
