Welcome to the new Ontario Ride to Conquer Cancer message boards. This is a place where you can share your fundraising and training tips, and give each other advice about how to prepare for the Ride.
These message boards are a more intimate and private version of our public message boards on Facebook which we also encourage you to participate: http://apps.new.facebook.com/conquercancer/fb_homepage
So that we can all get to know each other, please reply here with your name and your reason why you have chosen to participate in The 2009 Ride to Conquer Cancer.
2nd year rider. Last year's ride was quite an adventure.
I have signed up again to support a great cause and to prove to myself that I can make it down Hamilton Mountain twice without my brakes failing.
Before last year's ride I had not ridden a bike in years. I trained on my mountain bike, then bought a hybrid/road bike (not sure which, but lighter and with smooth tires) just before the ride.
I have also signed up for the Quebec Ride in July 2009....which should be another awesome adventure with funds raised going to a great cause.
If you'd like to join us our team on either ride, it's Walkers on Bikes. This team originated with a number of us who have walked in the 60km Weekend to End Breast Cancer for years and decided to show how multi-talented we are by cycling as well. It also includes non- walkers and most of us would probably be considered intermediate bikers.
Thanks for the opportunity to meet and greet in this informal setting.
My name is Don and I live in the east end of Toronto. I was a serious rider for many years until osteoarthritis stopped that about 5 years ago. In September 2007 I had a full hip replacement at the East General Hospital and while recovering from the surgery decided that I would make the Ride to Conquer Cancer my personal goal.
As to why this event?
I have so many family members and close friends that have been impacted by cancer that I felt this had just had to do something to help. My hope is that what ever small amount I can raise when combined with the efforts of so many other dedicated riders, some small miracle will happen.
