getting started for 2013

I am super excited about signing up for my second year and wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions for 2013.

This past year I was on a team of 10, this coming year I have gotten my hubby to join me on a team of 2. I was able to get all the money needed from friends and family but don't think I will be able to get as much for second year in a row so we need some help.

We need some help with items that we should be doing now as far as fundraising goes.. we would love some suggestions.

We are thinking of hosting a wine and cheese night as a fundraiser over the winter and if anyone has any experience hosting something similar we would love to get some tips from you.

I also need some help with sending out letters to some larger organizations in our area so if anyone can share any verbiage that they have used that would be great.

We need all the help that we can get!!!

The 2012 Ride was my 3rd year and I raised my $2500 without sending out letters or donations forms.

I raised close to $1000 with a raffle. I used my American Express points to "purchase" prizes so there was no overhead.

I also make homemade chocolate turtles which I sell over Christmas & for special occasions.  I've been told they are better than store bought ones.

I also connected with a company called "Think Recycle".  I collect old/used cell phones, blackberries, digital camera's, ipod's, laptops, ink & laser cartridges. I send them to Think Recycle and they pay me for items collected.  They also pay the shipping and if I send in 10 items & use my own box - not one supplied by them - they credit my account for $3. You won't make a fortune but every item sent in means another item that won't wind up in a landfill.  I made just over $200 this year with Think Recycle.  Their website is www.thinkrecycle.com  Anyone can do this.  It can be a slow start, but once people are aware of what your doing, items come in quickly.

Read through previous tags on this site.  There is lots of good ideas.

Your very smart to start early. People will pick up on your energy and enthusiasm.

Good luck.

Hey Wizzo

Take your fundraising to work or school aside from friends and family.

We do a Keg party every year as an example. We charge $30.00 per head for all you can drink beer and a pig roast. During the night we sell raffle tickets for prizes. Use your real close people to donat some prizes and such.

Last year we cleared $5000 plus in one night and had a great time as well

Look to local stores as well. LCBO is a pain because of all the rules they but Walmart and Canadian Tire are pretty cool.

We have two guys on our team riding stationary bikes outside a walmart last year and they cleared 2000 in one day

One Lady in our office bakes and sells Bananna Bread for us. She is fighting cancer now and is a non-riding member of our team. She raised 2100 for us.

We sold parking spots in our office during a big wharehouse sale that is next to our building on weekends and ended up with 3000.

fundraising is not hard if you are determined. Remember always ask for more than what you expect to get. If you think a friend is willing to give a 100 ask for 200. You'd be surprised how many times you get more than what you expect.

Finally, don't let people off. get in their face in a nice way and insist on some money. I wore my ride gear into work one day on a bet of $500 so i did it in a heart beat. I also made a rule that if anybody laughed at me they'd have to pay five bucks. Walked out that day with 1700 bucks stuffed in my spandex.

This will be my 6th ride. I love it and it gets easier to raise money each year. A little creativity helps out

Good Luck
