Awe crap they are calling for thunderstorms on Saturday. 60%!! Any past riders have experience at camp / on the road with thunderstorms / rain. Should we pack extra gear for camp? Please be kind to us Mother Nature!!!
This is my 4th ride and I think I have gotten a bit wet on each ride - the first year donning a poncho in a downpour on the route. Some riders pulled off to the side until the worst had past. I figure you are going to get wet standing around too so you may as well get some KM done. I believe the organizers say the route closes in lightening, but there is really no way to close the route. Riders should just pull over until it passes.
That being said, one part of the route could be getting rain while others further ahead or back will get nothing. I would suggest packing your day two gear in plastic and then in your bag. That way if you bag gets wet at all your clothes are good. Also, having been at the Weekend to End Womens Cancers walk camp during rain, pack extra shoes. Camp is grassy, with 1000s of ppl walking it quickly turns to mud.
But fingers crossed, if it does rain it will be quick and then over for the rest.
Lol what you have to do is relax, it's not going to rain, I've rode the past two years. First year it looked like the end of the world was coming and not a drop of rain!
Last year 35-40km winds and 30mm was expected from the Friday night weather report, not a drop!
And the same for yesterday at the ride for heart. You might see rain in forecast today and not tomorrow ( the 2 week trend didn't show a drop. So relax, it might rain in Toronto when we're already past that spot. And it's only rain we aren't made of sugar
It's rain. Or wind. Nothing that you can't deal with. Pack a change of clothes regardless of the weather, and a second set of riding clothes for day 2. If the weather is so treacherous that you don't think it is safe to keep riding, stop. Pull over and wait it out. Or flag a sweep van down and tell them you're not willing to keep riding. They'll cart you to a rest stop and from there you can arrange for someone to pick you up.
A high quality rain jacket will make the ride much more enjoyable should it rain. Just make sure it is breathable otherwise you'll sweat. A lot.
And if it rains be sure to drink lots of water. People tend to forget to drink fluids when it is raining as they don't realize how much they are sweating.
I'm a big believer in eyewitness weather. The forecast changes daily. Given the time of year the t-storms will probably be mid to late afternoon and scattered around. A nuisance that you can prepare for. I'm also glad there not calling for temperatures in the 30s.
Just checked and the weather is starting to turn back in our favor after the forecast being on the miserable side. As I agree it is what it is. No sense worrying about what is not fact and may never take place. Eyewitness Weather is the best description I have heard in a while. See you all in 3 days.
