i was lucky enough to get a LCBO tag day for the Trafalgar/Lakeshore Oakville location...
I've NEVER done anything like this before... I was planning on wearing my bike gear and having a little stand with pictures from previous years rides... maybe lolipops for all donations?
The whole thing feels ackward... but I would be so grateful for any advice!
Thank-you!!!!!

I've been lucky enough to get 2 LBCO tag days each year that I've done the Ride To Conquer Cancer - this is my 3rd year. You are on the right track - wear you ride gear, set up a (small) table and have something to give donors - a lollipop or candy of some kind is good. I give out yellow ribbons & Werthers. The last bit of advice is don't be afraid to ask E V E R Y O N E! (You'll probably be shy at first, but as the day goes, you'll get better at it.) Remember, if you don't ask, you don't get. People will gladly walk by but if you LOOK them in the eye and ASK, you probably won't be refused. And stay as long as you can. Last year I made close to $1000 but we were there ALL day. Oh, and one last thing - bring your Letter of Participation & some donation forms. Most people who donate, will not want a receipt but there is always the odd one who will take the time to fill out the donation form. As for the Letter of Participation, there is usually at least one person who will question your participation and want proof you are in fact collecting funds for The Ride.
Our team has done a number of tag days in the past - and some to great success. Our biggest day was a sunny Saturday and we collected almost $1600!
We use a lady named Randy at www.thinkpinkdirect.com - she sells a number of items (key chains, car magnets, etc) that can be used for fundraising. Everything Randy raises through her site goes back to The Weekend to End Womens Cancers. We would offer an item for a minimum $5 donation, quite often we get much more then that. People were responsive as they were getting something in return. Randy has special pricing for fundraisers so we were paying about $1 an item.
Be prepared to talk about where the money is going and how much was raised last year, etc. - you may get questions before people are willing to donate.
We would always set up a table, a huge sign, some music and have fun....my other big advice is to stand, not sit behind the table. You are easier to by pass when you are sitting. And we would always be careful to not be distracted by talking to each other and ignoring the shoppers - as Herbie said, it is all about talking to everyone!
You have to go through the LCBO head office. The contact is:
Central Region Office 2460 Stanfield Road Mississauga, Ontario L4Y 1S2 905-949-3522
Attenteion: Laura Brolund, Charity Advisor
I sent mine in early summer last year for this year so I'm not sure if she is giving out any more dates but you can certainly try. I have had my dates - which are in April - since December.
This is a very popular site/activity for the Weekend to End All Women's Cancers (benefiting Princess Margaret too). I did that in the past and have continued with LCBO Tag Days now that I am cycling.
Here is a big tip - even better than the LCBO - go to your local Walmart and see if you can do a tag day there. They will match any funds raised doing a tag day - up to (I think) $750. I'm not absolutely positive of the amount but I'm sure, your local Walmart will be able to fill you in.
Thanks everyone! All your suggestions are awesome... I was going to borrow my adorable 18mo niece... :p
My tag day is in June, so this will be my LAST hurrah before the ride itself...
wizzo... sorry for not getting back to you, I haven't been on here for a while, but I sent in my request in January and was assigned date for the first week in June... remember that you have the option of putting off your final pledge for two month (i think, possibly three) so if you do get a tag day for later, keep it just in case... Also, keep an eye on these boards... often people who can't attend their tag days will post last minute and offer them up...
Herbie... Why is it that I'm MORE nervous at the thought of doing a tag day in front of a Walmart? I wonder if anyone has had success with these?

I was fairly successful last year with Walmart. I made over $700 in one day and they matched it. We were given 2 different week-ends. This year, she said that we were only allowed one week-end and they will match up to $500. We'll probably set-up Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. It'll be better if you have people to come out and help you so that you're not on your own for so many hours in a row. This year, we ahve 4 on our team and we split the hours with 2 of us at a time on a shift. Give them your spiel as they are waling in. Even if they no, say "perhaps on your way out"
At the LCBO many people ignored us on the way in and when they were leaving, they emptied their pockets of change, into our container.
I have excellent signs if someone wants to borrow them.
My tag days are in Oakville on a Saturday and in Brampton on the following Sunday....
Problem is that the only weekend my party room was free for a fundraiser was THE SAME SATURDAY...!!! luckily I have some amazing friends who are stepping up and setting up the day of so i will stay as long as possible... but I'll have to be back in time for the party, around 6pm...

I have 2 signs that I had made up professionally from one of the logos. One is 2 x 3 ft. The other is about 3 x 6 feet. They have been used by "Herbie" and I many times for our fundraisers both last year and this. I'll need them on the april 21st and then again on April 28. YOu can borrow them after that. Please take good care of them.
You can borrow them anytime after that.
Call me 905-731-2437
I live in Thornhill but I work downtown. We could figure out a way for you to get them
April 21st Herbie is using the signs for an LCBO Tag Day and I need them for a Tag Day at a Wal-Mart April 28th in Richmond Hill. You can join me if you want for part of the day just to see how it's done (a real live lesson).
Awwww Herbie, thanks...! i read this message too late, and I would have totally been free then too... :(
How did you make out, if you don't mind me asking?
Fletch, sure, I'd love to drop in! What time will you be there? I am participating in the Mississauga 10km that day, but I will definitely drop by before hand...

My husband, daughterand I as well as a friendof my daughter's willbe at the Walmart in Richmond Hill on Major Mackenzie Dr. in Richmond Hill from about 10 am until 6 pm. There will be at least 2 of us at any one time.
We made $530.60 on Saturday. Not as good as our previous Tag Day but still awesome considering all we did was stand outside (in the cold I might add) and ask people if they would like to support the Ride to Conquer Cancer We arrived shortly after 10 a.m & stayed until about 4:45. We normally stay longer but my partner had to leave. And to be honest, by 4:45 I was darn right cold and being there alone, it didn't take much convincing for me to pack up and find some warmth.
One other thing, I had 2 people who asked for receipts - they both donated $20 each. One fellow was going to give us $10 but when I told him I could get him a receipt, he said if he could get a receipt, he'd up it to $20. So make sure you have donation forms with you.
My fundraiser should bring in upwards too $500... I was really counting on that tag day... Maybe $300 more from personal donations...
Thanks for the feedback!
Fletch, see you Saturday!
I really hope you guys have great weather... I'm coming in from Mississauga so I might try and take advantage of the drive an get in some cycling while I'm up there...
