Can someone please clarify!!!!

taken from the registration form...

"If I am a Rider, I understand that I must raise at least $2,500 in order to ride in the Event. If I have not raised at least $2,500 before June 9, 2012, I may make my own donation to reach that minimum in order to ride."

what? really?REALLY?

I am going to register, as is my wife.  $5000 is alot to commit to ($2500x2).  I am not saying we would not hit the combined target, but being a blue coller family with two young boys to raise, I cannot possibly guarantee that I can hit that goal, let alone afford being on the hook to make up the difference.

So my question is... is this for real!?!?

Yes, this is for real - each participant commits to raise a minimum of $2500.  The Ride wants commited riders - they put alot of effort, time, expertise, money and commitment to make this happen; they expect the same from the participants.  You may have to be inventive with your fundraising - but you'll do it and you won't be sorry.  This will be one of the most amazing & rewarding experiences of your life.  (Why do you think people come back year after year smile)  This is my 3rd year to ride and I fundraise all year long.  But there is no way that on June 9th, I'm am not going to be one of the 4000+ riders leaving Exhibition Place.   If your concerned, call the Ride office and talk to your Ride Co-ordiantor.  They are there to help you.  Or just read through the message board; you'll find some great fundraising tips.

^^^^^ I completely understand the need for commitment on behalf of the riders, and what a huge undertaking this is. At the end of the day, what what my point is, even though in this forum it may not be the popular one, is that it is a lot to ask. Even if my wife and I are able to raise $4000 between us ( which is still huge $$$), we would still personally be liable for the remaining $1000 ($500x2).

That is a huge hit, on what I assume would end up on my credit card. Riders commit time, effort and most likely money of there own leading up to the huge event. Its just really hard to imagine that now we may not be able to participate in this worthy cause because, even though I appreciate and support the cause 100%, I cannot possibly put this ahead of whats right for me and my family. Its not a matter of effort or dedication, it is reality and practicality.

I just think this is alot to ask for two people who work full time, commute to work and have a family to raise.

We all go through that fear of not making the $2500 but from my experience, the first year is relatively easy.  People are amazed & impressed that your going to do the Ride.  I think it gets more difficult as you do it year after year.  For me, my supporters see how hard I work to 1) reach the $2500 mark, 2) train and 3) how enthusiastic I am about the Ride.  They know that this is something I work extremely hard at.

Perhaps instead of focusing on raising $5000, think of it as having to raise $2500 each.  I know it still comes out to $5000 but there are lots of ways to raise it; like I said, sometimes you just have to be inventive.  You'd be surprised how giving people can be.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is definitely a challenge in more ways than successfully crossing that finish line.  But cancer is way more challenging! I'd take the challeges that the Ride offers over it any day.

Stay positive; don't let the negatives in.  You'll probably meet & surpass your goal!

ok waaaaaait a minute......

i assumed that if I wasnt able to reach the target of $2500 ($5000 including my wife) that the difference would be charged to my credit card.

After rereading the fine print, that may not be the case.

"I may make my own donation to reach that minimum in order to ride."

Does this mean worst case scenario I wouldnt be able to ride? What would happen to the money I had collected?

I know I am dwelling on this, but it concerns me.

Hi @sitnlow;

Your final post is the way it would work.

If you don't hit the minimum, you aren't permitted to ride, but there is no immediate obligation to ante up the shortfall.

The funds you raise (from the first $ to the last, whether you raise $10.00 or $10,000) all go to the Princess Margaret.

There are a number of options if you are close to the goal and still want to ride - I know of several people who did the "delayed self pledge" - which gives them 90 days after the ride to keep fundraising, and if they still haven't hit the minimum, the shortfall is charged to their card.

The other thing to watch out for is that the minimum is $2,500 per rider, not $5,000 for two of you. For example, my son and I are riding this year, and I have to make sure he gets $2,500 in his account or he can't ride - even if between the two of us we get well over $5,000.

Finally - don't stress too much about the fundraising. There are still 6 months to go, and there is lots of time. There are plenty of good fundraising ideas here on the board, and at the ride office. The biggest thing to remember is to ask for money - ask everyone. You aren't asking people to give you money - you're asking them to donate to a wonderful cause.

This will be my 5th year in the Toronto ride, and my 6th Ride to Conquer Cancer over all - my first year I was terrified of the fundraising (and the riding!) - but I've managed to raise at least $4,000 for every ride I've done, and nearly $6,000 the last two years.

Congratulations on taking the first step in a wonderful journey. Relax and enjoy it.

Kind regards,

Jason

Where abouts are you located? Have you thought about joining a team? Team's can fundraise together and then spread out the money accross the team (balances out those who have not fundraised as much). This is my second year doing the ride. Last year did it as a single, and this year have started a team, we are based downtown toronto and mostly Civil Servants from the OPS. There are 8 of us, but we are opne to anyone who wants to do the ride.

Last year I found facebook really helpful. Think about how many facebook freinds you have, now dived 2500 by that (say 100 people) it works out to $25 a person. THen if you can organize a few bigger ideas (pub nights, bingo nights, raffles etc) you can get some larger donations and should be able to meet the minimum. You need to start fundraising early!

@AJDad001

Your right, raising the money scares the crap out of me. I am sure once I get the first year out of the way, I will be more confident. When I am on the forums I feel like I can raise the funds.

I really do thank you for your positive comments and motivation. And for clarifying how the fundrasing works.

i am attending the orientation in Hamilton on Saturday. Hopefully that will put me over the hump

@mmgirl

We are located in Brantford. Facebook would definitally be a could tool that i cant believe i havent though of yet. For this year I plan on riding as a single (well with my wife)

Fundraising early is key for sure. Pending the outcome on Saturday, I will begin right away. 99 spots left apparently!!!

Fundraising is easier once you get into it. Just like the ride itself. It seems daunting at first but once you're out on the road it becomes easy.

You've commented a couple of times that it's a lot of the Ride to ask of you... but keep in mind you're signing up of your own free will. If you really don't think that you can achieve the goals and can't bear the stress, don't sign up. There are loads of other charities that could use your support, and don't have such huge fundraising goals. They also don't have an event as epic as the Ride!

Well no one said it would be easy.... today my wife and i attended the Hamilton orientation. After listening to stories and watching the video, and having a few questions asked, we both signed up on the spot.

So there it is. We both jumped in feet first, and are ready to start this exciting journey. Special thanks to those today in Hamilton, as well as those on these message boards, and well as Patrick Cook for giving us that little bit of reassurance that we can raise the money needed and put us over the hump.

Here we go!!!!!

Fantastic!!  Welcome aboard - you won't be disappointed.

Here is a little fundraising tip - go to your local Walmart & talk to the manager about having a tag day there.   Walmart will match what you raise - up to (I think) $1000.  Someone also said Costco will do the same but I'm not sure about that.

Good luck with your fundraising - remember, stay positive & you'll definitely do it.

Susan

Some Canadian Tires also support fund raising barbeques outside their entrances. Our church youth group has done a few there.

just a quick update on my progress.... after deciding to join this epic ride, I have already raised $790! I am very excited and grateful to those around me. I am 32% towards my minimum of $2500.....

I have pushed for donations at home, work and basically anyone who will listen. No one is safe! lol... but seriously through cash donations, online donations, bottle drives all is going very well!

my newest venture....

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I had 500 made at a cost of $200 from https://www.wrist-band.com. asking $2, and if i can sell every single one that would be $1000! not a bad mark up :)

Future plans also include a bbq, garage sale and of course 50/50 drives

Feeling great! Thank you everybody!

Awesome good for you! I too was scared that I wouldn't reach my goal. Don't be surprized if you get a lot of last minute donations. And also don't forget that if you choose the delayed self pledge, you have 60 days AFTER ride weekend to get the rest of your funds. I was a tad short last year, but it was worth it in the end. You'll have a blast!

A friend of mine made a crap load of money hosting a stag like event at a local strip club. He made a deal for a donation with the club that a portion of the funds came his way. In return he put out tons of invitations to his guy friends, male family members, golf buddies and male employees to come out for this great cause. Most showed up, the take was huge and he got enough of a return from the club that evening that he no longer had to fund raise. I am not saying you have to do the same thing....just be creative it works. Ever watch Risky Business.....lmao. Seriously many on here are in the same boat, be a little creative and it will pay off. Remember people do want to help in this cause.

It was awesome to talk to so many interesting people along the ride. Everyone was so courteous and nice. After 100Miles on day 1 (which was a lot easier than I thought) and one of most beautiful routes on day 2, a little soreness in the shoulders and legs was well worth it.

It is shocking. I rode in 2010 and didn't think I'd make it. But come ride time, I was a couple of hundred dollars over the minimum.

Hand out donation forms, the letter of participation, make up the business cards. Paperclip them and hand them out, mail them out. You'd be surprised at how it helps.

I have to raise the money and replace the bike stolen after my ride. And I'll do it. You can do this. There's all kinds of good advice on this board, I promise you.
