Despite having his chain and bike repaired, the same team mate snapped his chain again. Luckily there was a sweep truck there when it happened and the guys in the truck had a spare chain, and were able to repair it. Sadly, on both days with all of the challenges, his spirit was a bit defeated and made for a bit of a slow grind. Happily if gave me a chance to chat with many, many, many riders that I wouldn't have been able to meet otherwise.
In the pic I'm the skinny dude with the camera on his helmet - second from left, wearing TwinPro jersey.

Your thoughts on your helmet camera...we have had a few conversations about them this weekend and would love your insight Quality of pics? Battery life? Weight on helmet an issue at all?
Anything else you might want to add - the boys on our team are very interested
Pretty good ride, although I really struggled with the rolling hills near the end of Day 1. Wow, we got LOTS of feedback on the cows! I had no idea they'd be so popular.

Thx
It's a fun toy. The GoPro HD is the one I'm sporting.
Still photos are quite good. Video is good. Really good when it's bright and the objects being filmed are close. Objects in the distance get a little bouncy... the vibrations of the road/your body, etc really distort the image when played back. I'll post a sample to YouTube and link it here later.
On the helmet I found it to be VERY heavy. My helmet is the 2011 Specialized Prevail so the added weight was very noticeable. I used to mount the camera to my handlebar but I've snapped three sets of mounts so far this season so head and body mounts are it from now on.
Battery life - I get about three hours of HD video recording on a charge. Check out pointofviewcameras.com for a selection of alternatives.
Average speed 30.8 kph day one and 30.7 kph day two. Fresh but hilly day one and flat but tired (left knee started to cause pain about 55 ks into Sunday)by the end of day two.
Had a great half hour or more just out of the pit 2 on day two with team Innis where the sweeper van actually paced and drafted about 20 of us at 38-40 k that was great.
One of the guys on team Innis passed his camera to the person on the passenger side of the van. I would love to see those pics
I will post a pic of the mount I made for my Canon digital camera. Actually works fairly well. I've used it now for the 2009 ride and this years ride. I'll take some close up pics and post tomorrow! ;)
i have the garmin forerunner 305, did anyone else's battery die on the 2nd day prematurely? (i left mine on for a couple hours after getting to camp, so i think that did it as they're supposed to last about 10hrs.)
that said, day one stats for us:
- 161.43km
- 6hrs 1min
- avg speed 25.9km
- max speed 63.1km
- calories spent 5,880 (approx.)
- avg heart rate 124bpm
- max heart rate 209bpm (somehow i find that hard to believe)
I left my 705 on for a few hours after arriving at camp and almost fully deplected the battery. But I have a portable Energizer charger that uses 2 AAs and was able to recharge it overnight. A good investment when travelling with electronics. It can do phones, cameras and most devices that charge through a USB port.
MysteryBee - That was you with the cows? I loved them!!!
Too bad I didn't know that was you, wanted to thank you for your encouragement before when I was struggling to raise the money for the fundraiser. Well, I did ride and finish...just not as fast as you guys. LOL! I'm no racer!
I'm so happy to hear you reached the fundraising goal, Angel. And don't concern yourself with the numbers. Everyone moves at their own pace. The only thing that matters is that you join in. Our team had seven riders make it to the starting line... 3 in the K event and 4 in the M event. Four of us have already re-signed for next year, and the other three expressed interest. I thought for SURE some people would drop out, but crossing that finish line is addictive!
I'll be putting together another team in preparation for next year.
Thanks MysteryBee! There was alot of support here and I truly appreciated it. I surpassed my goal as well. The ride was tough on me, I had a injury with my leg a few months prior and was unsure if I was going to ride. I took all the precaution and tried to be really careful and prayed for no wipeouts!
Wish you best of luck next year! I have a wedding to prepare to be at so I can't be there!
Had a great time on the 200M route this year. I like to start relatively close to the front to on both days avoid the large packs. If you're in top 5% then there's a 95% chance that if accident happens it will be behind you, not in front of you :)
Couldn't be more proud of my girlfriend who stayed on my wheel the entire time and was the first woman finished the 160km on both days (yes, not a race but at each rest top the crew were always cheering her on, happy and surprised to see a girl in the mix!)
Day 1: (missed bit of first part of ride, my sensor had been bumped away from magnet and took me a while to realize what was up).
hey some of you are a lot faster than me... didn't you read my first post? :)
Phil were you in a large group? Congrats to your girlfriend for being the first to finish!
I'm with you on the garmin... Love it and all the geekyness that goes it. I thought about getting the 800 'cause it's all sleek and sexy looking, but I always have my iphone with me so mapping isn't really a necessity on a cycling computer.
I rarely look at the maps on my 705, but I love the data and the ability to customize the display. I have used the map while hiking, the bread crumb trail has helped us out a couple of times too.
I have an odometer, nothing fancy like all these Garmins, but it didn't work the whole weekend except to tell me what time it was! The tech guys said that one of the wires looks like it's pinched. Oh well! Someone I was riding with for a while on Day 2 said that we were averaging 18-20 km on flats. That's the fastest that I've ever gone.
good on ya TBA, it's nice to set a personal best on the second day of the event. 18 - 20 kph is a respectable speed after doing 100 kilometers the previous day. Going by the data it looks like those of you doing the K route had two good steep climbs while the M route was very easy gradual climb over 60 k without any major hills.
@RSinfield, on day one the group was maybe 20 leaving Mississaugua but once we hit the rollers on 15th sideroad it came down to just 3 of us. I use the ride as training so I do all the pulling and my girlfriend just holds my wheel (which is a workout for her too). On day two there were 6 of us for most of the way and then we lost one guy with about 30km to go, we traded pulls on day two which kept the pace up.
I generally don't like to ride in a large group unless I've ridden with them before, just too many risks and since we didn't have any serious head winds not much to gain.
