Day 2 - 100 Mile Route Bike Crash

Had the misfortune of crashing my bike somewhere after the first pit-stop on day 2 of the 100 mile route today. Front forks sheared clean off and I hit hard, landing in the ditch. My fault for looking back just when riders were coming over to curb side ahead of me.

I just wanted to say thank you to the other riders, the fellow who lived nearby that called 911, and the paramedics on duty.

While I was not all there after the crash,  I have a concussion and about 7 staples in my head. Helmet did it's job. I'll probably take a couple days, but i'm fine.

Sorry I couldn't finish the ride on such a great day. Thanks again to the support personnel and the other riders that looked after me until the paramedics arrived.

Walter

Oh, no! So sorry about your crash! Glad you're doing OK, considering! Yes, the helmets definitely do their job, don't they? Hope you recover really quickly, thank you for giving your best.

Sorry to hear about your crash it must have happened after we went through cause we didn't hear about it. Also heard someone in the 200m got hit bt a car in mississuaga near centenial park. He looked ok from what we saw. Hope everyone made it home with limited incidents. Was a great weekend and was alot of fun

Sorry your ride was cut short Walter, concussions suck and probably require more recovery time than road rash, bruising and stitches. Are you able to save the bike or is it a total write off?

On another helmet related incident we passed a rider on the 200M course just short of the falls who wasn't wearing a helmet at all. He was one of us and had the RTCC tags on his bike.

I was not able to ride this year but I was at the finish line to cheer everyone on - saw a 100 miler cross the finish line with his helmet hanging from his handle bars, would not have been much help to him there!

I was hit by another cyclist last year and thank goodness I had a helmet on - the only thing needing replacing was the helmet, which is a really good thing - much cheaper then replacing my head!

You may be the best rider out there but you never know about the unknown - a car with a driver not paying attention, another cyclist riding without looking etc.

Glad that you are going to be good Walter!

God was definitely on the ride with me because I was really lucky it didn't turn out worse than it did. Check out what happens to carbon fiber forks when they are stressed along the weak axis. That happens when the wheel turns to the side when the bike is still moving forward.

Glad you're ok and in somewhat good spirits. I had to watch a guy go down hard about 60 ft in front of me Sunday on Walker Rd. in Welland on the k200 route. I called 911 and one of the female riders that was there was an RN! Medical showed up and he was in shock so they started an IV. I ran into the Medical staffer who treated him until the ambulance got there and she too said she suspected a concussion because he couldn't remember the nurses name or one of the other questions she had asked him just 5 minutes earlier! Hope he's ok too. He was joking when the ambulance got there so he was in good spirits and that was a little reassuring

Wow Walter, I'm glad you are ok and in good spirits. I saw some wipe outs but no serious injury. One woman had those clip on peddles and she had stopped beside me, couldn't unclip herself and promptly fell over narrowly missing me and knocking me over. It was just so unexpected, I thought that she was exhausted but she couldn't get out of her clips!

A Hamilton bus almost ran me over...and he saw me...he was just pissed I was riding on the road in general and I was right up against the curb riding as I should be!
