On Day Two, did anyone hit or see something on the road that looked like it might have been deliberately put there?
My 16 year old son hit a horseshoe nail at the corner of Beaverdams and Hensler - nearly 80 something km along on Day 2. He was lucky not to have been taken down, but was out for the day.
It looks suspicious. The nail was shiny and brand new - and appears to have been already bent - not by the bike hitting it. Penetrated the tire, tube and the rim itself of a $600 Ksyrium rear wheel, which does not look repairable.
There are some crazies who will try to sabotage bike events - as at last year's Huntsville Triathlon - and if there any other examples this might not be just bad luck, but something for the Niagara Regional Police. They'd have a record of complaints, and local cycling haters.
Sorry to hear. I rode by just after it happened and heard the discussion. I didn't see any debris at all so suspect a bit of bad luck. Overall, I thought the course was very clean.
Thanks - Only got the go ahead in May to try to build up my strength - and I'm still on a full chemo load. I was completely inactive from January to that point - on doctors orders I followed to the letter.
The climb up to Short Hills was tough but at least I didn't stop and walk it.
Sure could have used a blood transfusion at one of the pit stops - tough to feel fast in your head but not be able to generate just a few more kilometres per hour than I could - had lots of fun regardless. Amazing weather, and an incredible feeling to come flying into that finish.
