Who's scared of riding with a 16-year old?

Please see the post "Need a very fast rider's help."

After working pretty hard on behalf of the RTCC last year, the return of my own cancer means I need someone to escort the person riding for me - someone who won't hold you back.  My son Ian is a nice kid - and would make good riding company on either day.

54 people have taken a look - but there hasn't been a single reply.

The rule about having someone accompany a rider under 18 isn't mine - its the Ride organizers. At this point, we may just have to ignore it if someone doesn't step forward.

Hi Cameron,

This is not a commitment but I have a team of 17 people and who I'm sure won't mind a 16 yr. old  riding with us (as long and he doesn't out ride us!!) :)

We are mothers, fathers, new and old friends and some cancer survivors so know what something like this can mean to a child. Take a look at our website and I will in turn ask my team if they're interested in taking on another body. We have however ordered team shirts and shorts and the payments been made. So if this happens he can buy a set if he's interested.

Where do you live?

I am all over this and yes CAPTAIN I support your decision...............He looks really fast!!!!!!!

Cameron: We'll do our best to keep him entertained and it's absolutely not a race.

Hello Ray and Catherine - and thanks for your response.

At this point at least I know there are some folks he could ride with so the organizers don't get nervous!

The photos of Ian show what he's like - two are of him winning races last year and one was taken at the Toronto Criterium - where at 15 he probably had bitten off more than he could chew.  Ian normally rides with grownups - athletes in their 20s and 30s for the most part who don't realize how young he is.   What you see is what he is - a strong kid with big legs who last year rode in the Alps and delighted in catching and passing local riders.

Ian is at Canadian and NA Biathlon Championships in Quebec City all week, where he is a very long shot for a medal, but we'll talk about this when he gets home.  His natural inclination will be to do Day One in under 3 hours -but then you have hours to sit around at the other end, and it is a long wait until dinner.  He wants to do the Steve Bauer Afterburn, too.

Can you send me your website? We live in central Etobicoke - pothole city these days.

I don't think he will spring for a uniform - but it is hard to say with him.  At 16, it has to look "cool".

The practice last year by the way was to wear your RTCC jersey on one day, your team outfit or whatever the second.

I'm very relieved that this is an option for us and that you folks are willing to (at least in theory) keep an eye on him.  Thanks for reading my post and stepping forward.

PS - I am one of the featured riders on the website - you can find my bio there. Sure wish I could do it again this year - it is a fantastic experience.

Hi Cameron,

We'd be more than happy to take on Ian. Let me know what needs to be done and please give me a call, 905-694-2705. As well we ride and train with the Rusty Hammers (team of 19) who will definitely give Ian a run for his money!!!

Our team name Fabulous Fifty

I am riding with a group out of Niagara area. All though we will probably hold him back he is more than welcome to ride along with me and my team. I myself am 30 years in age and I am a average rider. I see some have volunteered already but let me know if he would like to ride along with us.

Heck he could probably teach us lots about form and function on the bike.

Thanks for stepping forward but this resolved itself yesterday.

There's a team of middle aged speedsters called the Rusty Hammers that he can ride with - I did half the first day with them last year and they really motor. I left them behind when I realized that I'd be finished the day way too early.  Ate the
"lunch" at 9:15 for example.

One team member - Mike Badham - is President of Hardwood Ski and Bike. My son is a member of their racing team and they know one another already so that's a relief.

I understand the RTCC's rule here but my son did lots of long solo rides in both France and Germany last year so he's not your average 16 year old on a bike.

Thanks again. If you didn't do this last year - and the weather is OK - you will really enjoy this experience. They do think of everything and the campsite is not to be missed.

Hi Cameron,

Great to hear Ian has hooked up with the Hammers and I look forward to meeting both you and him as my husband is on the Rusty Hammers and Mike Badhams wife is on my team Fabulous Fifty.

Best of Luck to you over the next few months.

Catherine
